Society Confidential: It’s an island thing

6 July, 2011

The closer it gets to 100 years in existence, the harder it seems for the Detroit River Regatta Association to pull off the hydroplane powerboat Gold Cup races , which kick off on the Detroit River today at noon and run through Sunday afternoon. When major sponsors started pulling out several years ago, particularly Chrysler after the economy tanked, boat race fans and officials began scrambling year after year to make sure the water race would happen.

So far, so good. This year, although it’s not totally out of the woods (or should we say, out of the water), things are going pretty well, especially after a single, hush-hush donation of about $150,000.

Was it a corporation?

Man dies after falling out of stands trying to catch ball; 8-year-old son left alone

6 July, 2011

A Texas Rangers fan died after falling about 20 feet from the stands, head first, while trying to catch a foul ball tossed to him by a player yesterday. The man’s 8-year-old son was left alone in the stands.

The Brownwood (Texas) Bulletin identified the man as Shannon Stone, a lieutenant in that town’s fire department and a fireman for 18 years.

The accident happened in the second inning after Oakland’s Conor Jackson(notes) hit a foul ball that bounced back onto the field, according to Yahoo Sports blog.

Stone lost his balance and tumbled over the outfield railing as he tried to catch the ball tossed to him by outfielder Josh Hamilton. Anoth

visited the United States just last year and the brothers’ father, Prince Charles, has been a frequent visitor, most recently in May when he met President Barack Obama.

Charles and his wife, Camilla, also paid a popular visit to Northern California in 2005. William’s late mother, Princess Diana, who would have turned 50 this month, charmed Americans when she visited in the 1980s.

She’s here, at least in spirit, again this month. Photos of her radiant face adorn the covers of recent issues of numerous American magazines, including Newsweek.

No matter who the royals are, wherever they go, whatever they do, their visits never seem to get old.

“We’ve all grown up with it, yet it’s still a little bit mysterious to us,” Powers said of British royalty.

Kate Middleton nearly gave Canada a cheeky goodbye after a gust of wind blew up her dress and almost flashed her bottom to the world.

The Duchess of Cambridge’s ‘Marilyn Monroe’ moment came as she and Prince William touched down at Calgary airport, as their nine-day tour to the country reached its closing stages.

Walking across to meet well-wishers, Kate, wearing a yellow floaty Jenny Packham dress, struggled to save her modesty as she repeatedly was forced to hold down her dress as the wind blew.

Kate has a ‘Marilyn Monroe’ moment

After battling with the breeze, Kate brought smiles of joy to the face of a little girl with cancer by granting her wish to meet a “princess”.

Six-year-old Diamond Marshall, who has a large tumour in her abdomen, flew into Kate’s arms when the pair met.

The Duchess hugged the little girl who then presented her with a bouquet of flowers.

Sheen next roastee for Comedy Central

5 July, 2011

NEW YORK (AP) — There should be no shortage of material.

Comedy Central said Tuesday that Charlie Sheen has agreed to be the subject of its next celebrity roast. It will be taped in Los Angeles and air on Sept. 19.

That also happens to be the same night that Ashton Kutcher debuts as Sheen’s replacement in the CBS comedy “Two and a Half Men.” Sheen was thrown off the show after his hard partying forced a production shutdown.

The two programs won’t compete directly. The Comedy Central roast is scheduled for 10 p.m., an hour after “Two and a Half Men.”

Sheen says: “You could say I’ve been providing kindling for this roast for a while. It’s time to light it up. I
