Coffee shop closed by the Department of Health

11 January, 2012

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — West Brighton’s Coffee and Tea Market at 422 Forest Ave. fell victim to one of the City’s health inspectors in the last couple of days. Gates are down. Signs are up: “We are unable to serve beverages or food. Sorry for the inconvenience.” How could this place go from an “A” rating to getting shut down? They were just inspected on 12/14/11 and got only 8 points. We don’t know the whole story on this particular DOH visit as details aren’t yet posted on the Web. Interestingly, they had four other visits by the DOH this year, according to NYC.gov’s restaurant inspection pages. (1/13/11,  2/11/11, 4/07/11, 7/30/11 plus 12/14/11 and one within the week.) Granted they failed the first one in 2011. But Get more info…

Harrington: Here are 10 top shows for January

1 January, 2012

January can be the cruelest month for the live music fan.

The local concert scene, so vibrant during the prior 11 months, always seems to quiet down at the start of the new year. Few big-name acts tour through the Bay Area, or anywhere else, in January.

This year’s no different. The heavy action really won’t pick up until mid-February — when the Red Hot Chili Peppers perform Feb. 17-18 at Oracle Arena, followed by the 20th anniversary Noise Pop festival (Feb. 21-26).

But even in this relative downtime, there are plenty of worthwhile shows taking place — you just have to know where to look. Here are 10 recommendations.

1. Jack Jones: This 75-year-old vocalist has excellent references.

Preoccupied With Occupy

30 December, 2011

My poor husband, the Norwegian Artist, spent the entire afternoon downloading a graphic design and photo software program to his computer, only to find that, in order to open the program and actually use it, he needed another download.

But that’s okay, because the second download was free, according to the big button alongside its picture that said FREE. Only it wasn’t free; it just sort of looked that way. I’m sure there’s more to it, but the Norwegian wasn’t in one of his evocative, expressive moods.

“I should have ordered the box with the disks,” he muttered. “But the ship
