Chuck Bennett: Society: Party helps raise funds for child abuse victims

31 January, 2011

More than 100 guests had free rein of the first floor of David and Elyse Foltyn’s spacious Birmingham home Jan. 26 for a V.I.P. preview dinner party for CARE House Circle of Friends. The smartly appointed home was aglow with burning candles and crackling fireplaces. A large, comfortably decorated tent was erected over the patio for additional space.

A waitstaff passed hors d’oeuvres during a cocktail hour before guests were treated to a dinner of crusted chicken, grilled salmon and a roasted vegetable salad prepared by Sherri Walts Distinctive Catering.

The preview party, which was $125 per person, was to thank the donors, patrons and board of trustees for CARE House and the Circle of Friends luncheon, which took place the next day at the Townsend Hotel.

Jenna Bush Hager, former President George W. Bush’s daughter, who is an NBC special correspondent and author of a best-selling book, “Ana’s Story: A Journey of Hope,” was the guest speaker at the luncheon and also attended the preview party. Over 200 people attended the luncheon, which cost $95 per person.

More than $85,000 was raised from both events, with proceeds going toward CARE House crisis counseling, therapy, prevention and support programs and services for child abuse victims and their families.
