Movie Review – Shame

16 December, 2011

When you watch a trailer and see that the film stars Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan, you can instantly draw some conclusions. What conclusions I hear you say? Well, first off they are two of the best actors currently on the scene, and it’s very, very unlikely that they would both pick a dud of a script to be a part of. So safe to say you can at least think the film is going to be damn good, or at least solid. The second thing you can draw from their involvement is that it will most likely be in the art house genre. Now of course both of them have done mainstream films, with Fassbender the current go-to man in Hollywood, but when both of them are in one film, it kind of screams out that the film will have arty tones.

“Brandon is a 30-something man living in New York who is unable to manage his sex life. After his wayward younger sister moves into his apartment, Brandon’s world spirals out of control. From director Steve McQueen, Shame is a compelling and timely examination of the nature of need, how we live our lives and the experiences that shape us.”   Well I go into these press screenings trying to know as a little as possible, but I had heard about this film that it was a little on the graphic side. What that actually meant could cover many aspects. Sex, violence, or a combination of the two, and within the first few minutes that question was answered in all its swinging-between-Fassbenders-legs-glory. Full frontal nudity from both Fassbender and Mulligan will give you a good idea of the tone of this film which was a fairly dark, and yes graphic, depiction of a dysfunctional brother and sister relationship and their individual relationships with other people around them. So be prepared before going into this film to see a pretty confronting film about sex and relationships, but trust me when I say the acting from Fassbender is worth every dollar of your admission price!   8.5 out of 10 from me.
