Literary Happenings: Author explores queen’s long reign
At 10, her uncle’s marriage changed her family’s future forever. When she was 13, she met the young man who would become her husband of nearly 65 years (and counting). At 25, she became the monarch over a European nation and global territories. And this summer, as she welcomes the Olympics to London, Elizabeth II will celebrate the 60th anniversary — the Diamond Jubilee — of her reign.
“Elizabeth the Queen: The Life of a Modern Monarch” (Random House; $30) by Sally Bedell Smith covers it all, from her uncle David’s shocking abdication in 1936 to her grandson William’s wedding in 2011. Readers are provided with a light overview of general history and many behind-the-scenes details that reveal the queen’s work style, ceremonial roles, deeply personal faith and sometimes dysfunctional family relationships that have developed over her lifetime. It’s a fascinating look at a highly visible diplomat who has performed her role on the world’s stage with great stamina, humor and intelligence.
